STONES IN THE ROAD is an intimate vision of the Andean culture and people of Peru. From 1978 to 1989 Nubar Alexanian photographed the Andean people in their mountain villages and in the shanty towns of Lima. They have lived their lives through generations of change, from the Spanish conquistadors, to the confusion of civil war and drug traffickers. They are struggling to survive and hold on to what is sacred. The magic and mystery of their lives and their land is being threatened by poverty and hopelessness. This struggle, of having deep cultural roots on the one hand, yet no modern identity on the other, is the compelling story of STONES IN THE ROAD.
